Oh, well isn’t that wonderful.

"As you grow older, you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it - whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, he is trash."

A Living Portrait of the Man in Black
The Johnny Cash Project encourages users to sketch their own renditions from stills of “Ain’t No Grave" (Johnny’s final studio recording).

"The album and its title track deal heavily with themes of mortality, resurrection, and everlasting life. Through this website, we invite you to share your vision of Johnny Cash, as he lives on in your mind’s eye. Working with a single image as a template, and using a custom drawing tool, you’ll create a unique and personal portrait of Johnny."

UCLA alum Aaron Koblin, who’s artwork deals heavily with crowdsourced data visualization, collaborated with music video director Chris Milk to make this interactive element possible. You can view the project and start sketching here →

This reaches down and grabs the most basic elements of my inner stuff, and shakes them in the best way. I guess I’ve never really blogged about this, but Johnny Cash is basically it for me. He was so passionate, optimistic (yet chased by creative and chemical demons), cross-cultural, and beyond all that … an intoxicating storyteller. Now, in this, we can see the impression of a man through the eyes of many, the imperfectly traced yet unique reproductions of what came before, and we decide what we like best. It’s the variety and color we see in life, biology, and evolution, yet drawn in just Black, and about the man of the same name.
